South Dakota: Breaking Ground on Energy

Yankton, SD will likely become the site of the world's largest wind farm built by California-based Clipper Windpower. Word of it came as Yankton County commissioners approved a wind energy system zoning ordinance. The commission was given documents indicating that Clipper plans to invest $145 million in Yankton County.

Voters in Union County have approved re-zoning land for the proposed $10 billion refinery near Elk Point. With all precincts reporting, 58 percent of voters agree with county commissioners who already approved re-zoning 3,200 acres for the project. The zoning ordinance approved by county commissioners in March says Hyperion will have to follow all state and federal regulations when it comes to air, water, and wastewater coming in and out of the proposed refinery.
