Eiseley on Individual Moral Responsibility

 

For Loren Eiseley individual moral responsibility is the foundation of human survival and ethical dignity and can never be replaced by collective or institutional mandates. He warned his readers about the dangers of a silenced individual conscience.

Loren Eiseley told the truth when he argued that state-sponsored collectivism seeks to replace the individual conscience. He wrote, "I believe in Christ in all who defend the individual from the iron boot of the expanding collective state." 

In his 1960 book The Firmament of Time Eiseley argued that collectivist ethics can never replace individual moral responsibility.

The warning should be sounded about all movements that seek to shape people's moral conscience, be they on the left or the right.
