I agree with Justice William Douglas that the function of free speech is to invite dispute.
ReplyDeleteFree speech also should allow for an exchange of ideas.
The most important requirement for free speech is that all sides are given a chance to express their viewpoints.
It is the ideal of the American Republic, but many voices are not heard these days. Justice Douglas himself would have a hard time being heard in the present climate of shouting and banner waving.
